Yesterday evening the Institute of Cancer Research held a BioBlitz on site.
You might wonder where there is a green space among all of the modern buildings that make up the institute. However, several individuals have been involved in the maintenance of a green space behind the buildings and parking lots. They have erected slow worm fencing and created a pathway that winds through the grounds. Unfortunately plans are in motion to turn this area into a parking lot but in the meantime it represents a Chalk and Grassland Meadow full of native species.
A short one-hour walk around the area revealed over 50 species! And this was late in the afternoon on a mostly wet day! Many people are not aware of the biodiversity that exists around them. As natural spaces become increasingly limited, opportunities such as the BioBlitz can become important to help promote these areas and ensure they remain.
